MP Lifts leads in Spain a project in Next Generation EU funds

MP Lifts leads in Spain an initiative involving 96 Spanish SMEs seeking 71 million euros in Next Generation EU funds

MP is heading a group of 96 Spanish SMEs representing 23% of all companies in Spain’s lift sector, which have come together to apply for 71.4 million euros from the Next Generation EU recovery instrument. Their aim is to use the funds to improve mobility within buildings, meet new demand and strengthen the sector as a whole.

MP Lifts has been chosen to lead this initiative, as it is the only one of its kind within the independent (i.e. non-multinational) sector in terms of size and insofar as it encompasses the entire value chain, as well as due to its leading position amongst SMEs within Spain and internationally.

The project aims to install 9,300 lifts and modernise another 30,000 over the next three years; increase the turnover generated by the sector to around 4,500 million euros, i.e. a 50% increase, over the next five years; increase the market share of SMEs within the sector to 20-30%;  create 7,500 new jobs (5,000 of which within SMEs); reduce the second most common cause of accidents; improve the efficiency of the production process; cut CO2 emissions; and promote practices which restore the environment

In order to achieve this, it is important SMEs within the lift sector become more competitive by digitalising and making their products, services and industrial processes sustainable through strategies and tools which allow them to become an essential part of the value chain and grow as the country transforms; adapt to meet new demand without losing their independence; and strengthen Spanish industry in a decentralised manner.

Currently, many lifts are in need of modernisation work and there is still a large number of buildings which do not even have a lift, meaning there is much work to be done to improve mobility within buildings as well as social cohesion. Of the eleven million lifts there are in the world, only an extremely small percentage of them are connected to the IoT (so-called ‘connected lifts’), another area where there is still a lot of work to be done. What’s more, lift configurators are becoming more and more common, something which is making orders and deliveries much easier.

Connected Lifts

The project has four areas: products and services, industrial processes, the structuring of the sector and social demand. In terms of products and services, the aim is to focus on connected and environmentally-friendly lifts; modernisation kits for old lifts; energy-smart lifts; and the use of augmented reality for maintenance and sales/marketing; as well as on allowing people to move around buildings with ease.

As far as industrial processes are concerned, the objective is to promote the use of clean energy and electric mobility solutions, the correct management and recycling of waste, and Manufacturing 4.0. As part of the aim to structure the Spain’s lift sector, the 96 SMEs involved in the initiative want to create comprehensive predictive maintenance platforms, promote the use of digital maintenance logbooks for lifts and escalators, and implement a comprehensive training programme. And finally, in terms of social demand, the companies involved are eager to improve the energy efficiency of lifts.

MP installed a lift in SCANIA Industrial Complex in Huelva

MP installs a good lift in the Eovastudio project at the Scania Industrial Complex in Huelva

Our congratulations to the Sevillian architecture studio Eovastudio., which has been nominated for the European Union’s highest award for Contemporary Architecture, Mies van der Rohe 2022, for the installations at the Scania truck dealership in Huelva.
It has been a pleasure for MP to work on this singular building project with the installation of a lift that provides service to the load needs required by the company. MP has installed a 1500kg MP Mega for 20 peoplehave awarded their 2020 Architecture Prize to the team at Eovastudio for the facilities they designed on Huelva Business Park for commercial vehicle manufacturer Scania. More information

The building has an industrial design, and is highly significant given that the design value of modern industrial architecture is usually minimal and rarely recognised with such awards.

MP takes part in the project eCity Sevilla

MP takes part in the project eCity Sevilla

#eCitySevilla, towards the 100% sustainable city.

The project #eCitySevilla, a public-private partnership initiative led by the Andalusian Regional Government, Seville City Council, the Cartuja Science and Technology Park (PCT Cartuja) and Endesa, proposes the development of a model city on the Cartuja Island in an open, digital, decarbonised and sustainable ecosystem by 2025.

  • 100% RENEWABLE
  • 100% ELECTRIC
  • 100% SELF-SUFFICIENT

Thanks to this project, Isla de la Cartuja in Seville will have a fully renewable, digital and decarbonised power supply by 2025, significantly bringing forward the goal of the EU to be climate-neutral by 2050.

Five working groups are developing the strategies for each pillar of the project, namely energy, sustainable transport, buildings, digitalisation, and communication and engagement.

MP is actively involved in the Sustainable Transport and Buildings groups.

In terms of the Sustainable Transport group, we are going to participate in an initial initiative which aims to encourage those who work in PCT Cartuja to use sustainable means of transport. This pilot project will last 3 months and begin at the beginning of 2021. It will use the Meep platform, a MaaS (mobility-as-a-service) app, which will be integrated with the services offered by Ciclogreen. Staff at MP will be encouraged by HR to get behind the initiative.

In terms of the Buildings group, one of the objectives is to reduce energy consumption in the buildings in PCT Cartuja by an average of 35% by 2025. To achieve this, we will first need to identify possible measures to increase energy efficiency in each individual building. As far as our own building goes, José María Barquín is already busy laying the groundwork.

MP’s solutions to help fight Covid-19: safe spaces for passengers

MP’s solutions to help fight Covid-19: safe spaces for passengers

Passenger safety has always been a priority here at MP.

From the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, MP has focused on making lifts safe spaces for those who use them. As such, it has focused on three areas:

    • Air inside the car.
    • Surfaces which passengers come into contact with: buttons, walls, handrails and door handles.
    • Social distancing between passengers using lifts.

We have created a comprehensive range of solutions relating to these three aspects, all of which are fully compliant with health authority recommendations:

    • Airborne transmission: air purification by way of UV-C LEDs and constant air flow.
    • Direct contact transmission:

* Adhesive film with antimicrobial properties.

* MP CallMyLift: an app that allows users to avoid contact with lift buttons by selecting their destination from their mobile phone.

* Cleaning of car surfaces with disinfectant.

    • Social distancing:

* ‘Lift full’ feature to ensure social distancing.

* ‘Direct journey’ feature (lift goes from A to B without stopping).

* Footprint floor stickers to ensure social distancing.

Safety measures have also been created for escalator passengers, for whom we have designed a germicidal device that uses UV-C LEDs to clean handrails, as well as footprint floor stickers to make sure they maintain social distancing.

COVID-19 solutions. Car air purification

Purify the air inside your car by combining the effectiveness of UV-C* light and forced air circulation

MP’s solution for purifying the air inside your lift’s car combines the effectiveness of UV-C* light and forced air circulation, activating when the car is empty and leaving it ready to be used immediately afterwards without any risk to passengers. As this is an ozone-free product, ventilation is not required.

*UV-C is a disinfection method that uses short-wave ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate micro-organisms by destroying nucleic acids and interrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions.

Thanks to a small fan, the air inside the car is constantly moving and when it comes into contact with the UV-C LED light it is disinfected, with micro-organisms being killed or inactivated by destroying nucleic acids and interrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions.

This system is tamper-proof and safe for passengers. Car ventilation is not required.

The kit only comes on when the car is empty and its light is off (the kit includes a car light timer). If the germicidal kit detects movement near the car or the lift is called , it immediately turns off.

The kit can be adapted to any lift, it operates independently from the car operation and can be fitted to any ceiling except glass ceilings.

The kit is compatible with any lift, operates independently from the car’s controller and can be fitted to any ceiling, except glass ceilings.

Its design is tamper-proof and uses a thin aluminium frame (less than 1 cm) bolted to the ceiling panel. As the system uses LEDs, it has a longer life cycle than that of systems that use mercury-containing tubes.

There is no need to ventilate the car (compared to when ozone disinfection technology is used) and it can be used immediately after UV-C treatment. This smart safety system, which is certified by OCA GLOBAL, meets the requirements of EN 0068, ensuring lift passengers are never at risk of being harmed by the ultraviolet light.

ARCO - R&D Innovation Ecosystem

ARCO R&D Innovation Ecosystem

At its factory on the Calonge Industrial Park in Seville, MP has a building which houses an R&D lab.

ARCO is our innovation model, based on the in-house expertise of our engineers, in addition to an external system of knowledge, an innovation management model, and laboratory and testing systems.

Objective

The objective of the lab is to ensure design requirements are met. Here, particular emphasis is placed on the RELIABILITY and SAFETY of the components and solutions.

Having our own lab allows us to be more competitive and cut our time to market.

This applies to both our own designs as well as approving external components used for our solutions.

Work carried out

The main work carried out in our lab involves testing. Virtual tests are also carried out by way of simulations, prototype assemblies, functional tests on prototypes and final tests prior to launching new products.

Tests are carried out on real samples in our test tower.

Testing capacity

At MP’s laboratories, we are able to carry out tests pertaining to around 100 different categories, of which the following are particularly noteworthy: electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, climate, acoustics and vibrations, functional movement, fatigue, failure modes, software functionality, assembly methods, etc.

Lab resources

The test instruments and equipment, which include around 200 items, can be grouped into four categories:

1.TEST TOWERS

We have a 24-metre-high modular tower with capacity for four lifts. The tower is equipped with sensors and all the necessary protective measures in order to keep workers safe.

At this tower, we can test banks of four connected lifts up to a speed of 1.6 m/s.

Furthermore, we have a 10-metre-high hydraulic tower, a specific tower to carry out SAFETY tests on safety gears and 2 towers to undertake functional software tests.

2.MECHANICAL TESTS

Focused mainly on lift doors and machines, the lab has all the test benches and tools necessary in order to ensure strict compliance with the majority of requirements found in applicable standards.

Tests for all other relevant requirements are carried out by accredited bodies.

3.SIMULATION OF MOVEMENTS

The difference in speed caused by changes in versions of hardware and software (the difference being bigger in the latter case) requires simulation systems which ensure the correct implementation of new features and the compatibility of new versions with what has already been installed. This allows us to continuously improve the features of our products.

4.ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC TESTS

These are done in a fully equipped electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) lab, which has a pre-certification semi-anechoic chamber, instruments to carry out functional tests, a climatic test chamber and equipment to check electrical safety.
